The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
